Should Women Use 5% Minoxidil?

Rogain for women, which contains 2% minoxidil, is the only FDA-approved medication for the treatment of female hair loss today. The main reason why women should exercise caution when using minoxidil is the fact that it can induce undesired facial hair growth. However, it does not seem to be such a big problem as it does not happen too often and the peach fuzz which sometimes grows tends to disappear once the treatment has been discontinued. Another reason why women are advised to use only 2% minoxidil solutions is the fact that at this concentration minoxidil is easily soluble in ethanol, which makes the solution dry fast and enables women to style their hair as usual. In order to dissolve the larger quantities of minoxidil needed to achieve higher concentrations more viscous solvents are necessary, such as propanol or propylene glycol. Such vehicles make the mixture dry slowly and leave the hair looking greasy and more difficult to style. In addition, propanol and propylene glycol frequently cause redness and itchiness of the scalp, which can in turn lead to overabsorption of minoxidil and result in unwanted side effects. This seems reason enough for 5% minoxidil mixtures not to be recommended to women.
Nonetheless, in clinical trials, the 2% Rogaine worked in barely 42% of individuals, whereas the 5% liquid worked in 64% of individuals, and Rogaine foam 5% has been shown to work in nearly 85% of test subjects. That is a significant difference in efficacy for various applications of the same medication. Rogaine foam, in addition to being the most effective form of minoxidil delivery, is also the most comfortable as it dries quickly and does not negatively affect the appearance of the hair. The only reason for a woman not to use 5% minoxidil solution in the form of Rogaine foam is the fear of unwanted hair growth. Given the fact that this side effect is uncommon and is reversible, it may make sense to recommend this product to women if it can improve results. Needless to say, many doctors already do recommend Rogaine foam to their female hair-loss patients. In order to minimise the chances of negative side effects, women should apply Rogaine foam at least 30 minutes after washing their hair, in order to avoid overabsorption, and should interrupt the treatment if an allergic reaction occurs. Pregnant and women who are breast-feeding should stay away from minoxidil-based hair loss treatments altogether.

Xandrox Consumer Reviews

"I have tried many types of minoxidil-based topicals and my observation is that the higher the minoxidil content, the more effective the treatment is. However, at some point, it makes little sense increasing the concentration further. 15% looks reasonable to me as the 20% mixture is too unstable and leaves crystals of minoxidil in your hair rather than in your hair follicles, where they are needed. When buying higher concentrations, I usually get them with 5% of azelaic acid, which is an added benefit. I have been using 15% minoxidil for two and a half years now and was pleased to see some regrowth at the beginning but after about 9 months my situation stabilised and since then I have only kept what I have left."

"I am using a mixture of 15% minoxidil and 5% azelaic acid with good success. I have tried numerous other minoxidil products in the past but this seems to work best for me. The only drawback is that it leaves a residue of crystallised minoxidil on my scalp after drying but, despite that, it is less irritating to my skin than branded Rogaine and dries faster. And last but not least, 15% strong minoxidil has noticeably thickened my hair."

Spectral DNC Consumer Reviews

"I am still waiting to see results. I started this treatment three months ago and almost threw it away immediately as I could not get the cream out of the container. Spray pump did not work. But the second bottle did so I have at least one that works fine and can be refilled. This stuff is really horrible so I hope it is for some reason. I am using it twice daily as recommended by the manufacturer, to this day with no results just my hair is getting red."
"I can honestly say that this is the only product from a number of hair loss remedies I have tried so far that managed to grow back some of my lost hair. It is better than Rogaine and Propecia. It gives me no side effects and I will continue using it. It seems to contain many useful ingredients with proven hair benefits, which make it a bit expensive."

"I know it may not work the same for everyone but I am generally pleased with this product. I am getting really good results, as it seems to have stabilised my hair loss condition and made my existing hair grow faster and thicker. Spectral has its weaknesses, too, as it is quite expensive, the spray bottle clogs up, it is oily and gives my hair a yellow tinge if I do not shampoo daily. It also gave me terrible shedding initially, which lasted nearly two months. But I am glad now I was patient and did not abandon the treatment. All the hair I have shed came back thicker and stronger. Since it is so greasy I am considering using it only once a day at night, to see what happens."

Bosley Taking Over as the Market Leader in Hair Regeneration Research

Aderans Research Institute, an affiliate of Bosley and one of a few research units in the world involved in exploring hair regeneration (also known as hair cloning) has recently announced that it acquired the key research assets of its main competitor, Intercytex, one of the market leaders in the area of hair regeneration. This news was not unexpected as Bosley held an option to negotiate an exclusive distribution agreement for ICX-TRC, a new hair regeneration therapy being developed by Intercytex. Besides that, Intercytex put itself up for sale at the beginning of last year following the failure of a Phase III study of its leading project, involving Cyzact. Bosley was expected to get involved, which finally happened through its affiliate Aderans Research Institute, a subsidiary of Aderans Holdings Company of Japan, the world’s largest wig manufacturer. Bosley, through Aderans, has thus solidified its position as the leading research company in the area of hair regeneration. The acquired assets only include assets related to the research into ICX-TRC hair regeneration therapy. Intercytex was also involved in two other areas of medical research but these assets are being dealt with separately. This acquisition comes at a time when Aderans Research Institute is extending its own Phase II study of hair regeneration after it recently treated the trial's 100th subject. Intercytex's own study of ICX-TRC is also at the late stage of Phase II.

Alpecin Consumer Reviews

"I have been using Alpecin Double Effect plus liquid daily for the last 6 weeks and am already seeing significant hair regrowth. The fine transparenthair on the top is now growing thicker and returning to its original light brown colour. Very impressed so far."

"My hair has been thinning for almost 7-8 years, due to extensive weaving and extensions. It was also extremely weak and fragile. My hair was so thin and fine, I could no longer conceal my bald patches around my temples and around the forehead.
I decided to try out alpecin (I had a good feeling this could help). The sensation was intense and it turned out to be the most effective hair product I have ever used. Not only has my hair regrown, it is now dense and extremely strong from the roots. My hair has not been this thick since I was 20 years old. Some products do work."

Dutasteride (Avodart) Consumer Reviews

"Generic dutasteride was the first hair loss treatment I ever tried, so I cannot say how it compares to other treatments I have used. I decided to use the most powerful product out there right from the beginning since I was starting late. I wanted to address the problem from within as I do not believe that any topical could help at my stage. I noticed a lower libido at the start of the treatment but it is back to normal now. Later, as I managed to thicken and regrow some hair and thought to have achieved the full potential of this drug, I added minoxidil twice daily and saw some additional improvement in thickness. I am happy with how it all works and at the moment have no plans to change anything."

Rogaine Foam Consumer Reviews

"Although Rogaine foam is not recommended for women, I can report having great results from it. I was using Rogaine for women for 6 months, which helped me reduce my hair loss but it was only after I switched to Rogaine foam that my hair started becoming fuller. The foam works better and is easier to apply than liquid Rogaine."

"This is a great improvement over the liquid form. It has its typical smell that many are complaining about but other than that this stuff is practically unnoticeable in your hair a few minutes after application. It does not differ from minoxidil lotion in terms of its efficacy and the premium you pay is for it being so easy to apply. In my opinion, Rogaine foam is amongst the best hair loss solutions currently available. I will continue using it."

"I’ve used liquid Rogaine for about three and a half years, sometimes experiencing itchy scalp and dandruff, which caused me to break off the treatment quite a few times. I have tried other oily generic lotions too but the problem has always been the same, they took long hours to dry and made my hair sticky. In April, I started using Rogaine foam and I think I will stay with it as long as there is no better hair-growth stimulant available. It is easy to apply, dries quickly, visually it cannot be recognised and it is not giving me dandruff. It is, though, a lot more expensive than the liquid. The weakness is its unpleasant chemical scent. I do not know what is in it that it smells so weird but its smell will be with you for about half an hour. The foam appears to me to be just as effective as the liquid Rogaine in stopping my hair loss. I have not experienced any regrowth before and I doubt Rogaine foam will give me any either. I am using it as a prevention and to thicken my existing hair and I am not combining it with any other hair-growth treatment."

A Quick Update on Bimatoprost Hair Loss Study

Bimatoprost, a glaucoma treatment that has been recently approved for lengthening and thickening eyelashes (Latisse) is currently being studied for its topical use in promoting hair growth in patients affected by hereditary hair loss. Preliminary reports from laboratory tests with human hair sound encouraging. It has been reported that the topical use of bimatoprost can make hairs grow faster and longer and can prolong their growth phase.
These positive findings may soon result in a clinical trial beginning. Even if everything goes smoothly, it will take several years before this treatment can be approved for treating hair loss on the scalp. Therefore, some hair restoration doctors, as well as some patients, are already experimenting with the topical use of bimatoprost and the first reports are largely positive. One of the obstacles at the moment seems the relatively high cost of Latisse (eyelashes treatment) which is ridiculous when compared with the cost of generic bimatoprost 0.03% from Allergan, used to treat glaucoma. Nevertheless, this is one of the ongoing developments in the area of hair loss research to keep an eye on.

Adenogen Consumer Reviews

"I live in okinawa japan. i was introduced to Shiseido's Adenogen about 2 months ago. i was hesitant to use this expensive product, but at that point, i ran out all my option of rogain, minoxidil, etc... I have been using this item for 2 months now. my hair looks fuller than ever. When i used to use minoxidil or rogain, i had this greasy feeling on my hair, and didn't feel comfortable at all. But adenogen actually contains mint, it feels refreshing, and my hair feels stronger when i touch it. i started to see some short hairs growing out around hairline. it's still thin and short, but we'll see how it goes. once i saw some result, i have recommended this item to my fellow bald co-workers. the result was same as me. 2 of them started to use it last month, and they also experienced different sensation from rogain and minoxidil. i will continue to post comments on adenogen as my treatment progresses. so far, i absolutely love adenogen!!!"

Restoria Consumer Reviews

"I stumbled into Restoria 3 Minute Colour Treatment sometime towards the end of 2009. After using it for the first few days, I got desired result.
Future applications did not colour my hair black as much and I got lovely blonde highlights here and there.
After the first batch, the store did not stock them any more. The next batch obtained from another source later has turned most of my hair brownish; the parts that were black.
I was wondering why the same product did not give the initial satisfactory result. This might point to the fact that the composition of the active ingredients could have been changed.
I am not quite liking that and will be using hair dye to get my hair back to black.
I am not quite sure about the effect of the Restoria Lotion or Cream. It would probably take much longer time to achieve results with them; while the 3 Minute Colour Treatment tends to give a sort of instant result.
The 3 Minute Colour Treatment does not colour my hairline area at all and this is where I need it most.
I will keep using the stock that I have purchased with the hope of getting results and that my hair would not keep changing to brown."

"I bought it hoping to be able not to grow grey roots. it seems to be working after using it only for two days, but i do not know that i would be able to continue to use it. The smell of sulphur is owerpowering and i really stink."

Dermenodex Consumer Reviews

"I tried it out because I noticed thinning in certain areas. After a month and a half and using it once a day I noticed my hair was growing in thicker in the areas I noticed thinning. I even noticed baby hairs growing scalp line that I never had. I thought it was funny to see hair growing where there wasn't before. So I recommend it but you have to use it faithfully to see result."

"I have been using the 3 treatments and I am extremely happy. The only thing is that they discontinued the product. All, the good things are gone. That bad and expensive remain."

"I have been testing Dermenodex thinning hair scalp treatment for four months, having read quite a few positive reviews of it on the Internet. I used minoxidil before I started with Dermenodex and have not seen any positive or negative effects after the transition from one to the other. Dermenodex alone seems about as good at maintaining my hair as minoxidil but it gave me no additional regrowth, so, after 3 months of using it, I decided to add minoxidil to get the benefits of both products. I am applying minoxidil in the morning and Dermenodex at night."

Propecia Consumer Reviews

"My doctor suggested Propecia recently as I started losing hair rapidly. I wasn't too worried about its possible side affects because I understood this was the only existing medical option to keep my hair. Unfortunately, my hair loss is progressing too fast, so even though I decided to increase my daily dose of Propecia to 2mg, it seems I am going to be completely bald in my early thirties. I inherited this gene from my father, who started wearing hats at the age of 24 to hide his bald top."

"I have been on Propecia for four years now and it is still doing good work for me. It has stopped my hairline receding and I have regained my former hair density in the crown area. I heard many warnings about its bad side effects before I got on the pill and I am happy to say I have managed to minimise the sides with regular daily exercise and healthy diet, which keep me physically fit. It is said that Propecia stays in your body for 24 hours but I would not trust that statement; so if you want to have kids, break up the treatment."

"So far so good. I have been on generic Propecia for two and a half years, having a decent regrowth with no side effects at all. Use just 1 mg a day or less to avoid side effects."

"I have been using generic propecia 1mg for six months and it is really working fine with me. You need to stay away from the medications which willincrease the intensity of the side effects. You can have a look at the list of medications you should not take while you are under the this medication."

"Although I cannot complain about a lower sex drive or breast enlargement caused by Propecia, I have experienced a significant increase in my body mass around my waist in eight months on this drug. I ditched it about four months ago and I am doing more exercises now to drop weight. I cannot find any reason for my sudden weight increase other than getting on Propecia. I would like to resume using it once I am back at my normal size to see what happens when I exercise more. I saw some of my vellus hair becoming longer and more pigmented and would like to try it again."

Rogaine Consumer Reviews

:
"I have been putting Rogaine on my scalp for a little more than a year and saw some hair growing back in the crown area. But my hairline does not seem to get affected at all, although I always make sure that it gets fully covered when I am applying it. I seem to have more hair growing in my ears though."

"I am balding in the crown area and started using Rogaine about 4 years ago at a point when I already could feel the thin spot with my fingers. The thin area was about 2 inches in diameter but not yet completely bald, just thinner, while the hair in it was visibly shorter and lighter in colour than my other hair. I decided to give Rogaine a try and started with the regular, branded product twice daily. I have also tried Kirkland Rogaine and both worked fine. I had a shed about 6 weeks after the start of the treatment and noticed that my hair got clearly thicker and darker a few months later. Now, I am still using Rogaine for maintenance, my hair is not changing much, the hair in the crown will never be the same as it was in my teens but it has definitely thickened up compared with what it was like at the beginning of the treatment. I believe that Rogaine works, you just have to use it consistently."

"I am not sure whether other readers find it positive or not but one aspect of Rogaine for men that I like is the fact that it dries so slowly. It makes me feel that its effects last longer when compared with other fast-drying minoxidil lotions. I have used a variety of generic minoxidil products in the past but they always gave me the impression of drying my scalp and making my hair appear thinner and colourless. Rogaine has made my hair thicker and darker."

"This is my third month using Rogaine for Women 2%. I have mild hair loss located at the very front of my head, and per my dermatologists advice gave Rogaine a try.
This is the beginning of my 3rd month using Rogaine and I can clearly see new growth. Moreover, the new growth is thicker in diameter than the original hairs which is why I can see them so clearly.
Now, here is the downside. Rogaine works a bit too well for me as I have experienced unwanted hair growth on my face as well. The once barely visible fine or "baby" hairs are much thicker too AND have migrated further down my face. I also grew a stray hair on my nose - LOL.
That said, my once sparse eyebrow hairs are also thickening which is another plus for me.
Though facial hair growth is bad for a woman I am willing to deal with this as it indicates that my body is responding to Rogaine. And since I pluck and wax anyway, this really is not an issue.
I experienced dandruff during the first two weeks but this has resolved itself.
All I can say is give it a try, what do you have to lose except for the obvious - more hair."

Emerge for Men Hair Enhancer Consumer Reviews

"I am a middle aged man with typical male pattern baldness (thinning on the crown of my head, some receding of the hair line). To add "insult to injury", the remaining hair I do have is starting to turn gray. Now, I am not really interested in surgery, and I have tried Rogaine, but needed to stop when my wife was pregnant, so I just resolved myself to losing my hair gracefully. However, the dawn of hair loss concealers has been a real boost for people like myself, as I can hide the appearance of hair loss quickly and easily. I ended up trying a few different products (mainly the sprinkle fibers), but found that a little messy and difficult to apply on my own (remember, it's the back of my head that's balding). The product I found to work best is EMERGE For Men Hair Enhancer. It comes in a small tube, with a brush, and it can be applied to the hair / scalp without any mess. The product "thickens" the thinning hair and can also darken the scalp to further conceal the balding patches. It's waterproof as well, so there's no risk of it running if you sweat or if it rains (trust me, I sweat a lot, it doesn't run). I can't say the same about other products - some of them will run, and that's pretty embarrassing to me. If there's a complaint, it's that I went through the tube rather quickly. It sells for about $15.00, and I used it in about 3 weeks. If you want to try something different in a concealer, give them a try!"

Touch of Gray Consumer Reviews

"I tried various men's products and then moved to women's products because they lasted longer. The hair looked unnatural because it was all one exactcolor, and also had a dull quality. Touch of Grey fixed that, it adds some color, but is not so radical. It's the first time I felt like my hair didn't look coloredat all. I leave some grey in front and just color the rest and it works very well."

"I tried this product despite its poor reviews on other review web sites. I should have listened to the other reviewers. For me, the product did not last more than a week before I had to apply more. Luckily I read from another reviewer that you can use the tube more than once by just capping it and making sure all the air is out of it. I have much better results with the products my wife buys, they last longer and provide more uniform color. Do yourself a favor and avoid wasting your money on this product."

"This is absolutely the best product I have used for coloring gray hair. Resistant hair is colored well and it is easy to use, with no mixing. It lasts longer than it takes for my hair to grow out until the roots need treatment again. This is much better than any of the competitors"

"I used the "Medium Brown" version and it covered all of the grey which is not really what I wanted. Fortunately it lasts only about a month. Not sure why it completely removed all of my grey instead of just some of it as advertised."

"This is the first off the shelf product like this I've tried. In the past I've gone to a hair stylist that combed in color to give the salt and pepper look.
The problem with stylists are:
a) its not a technique most of the them know;
b) cost me around $50 a shot; and
c) the results were uneven - either sometimes resulting in not enough color or other times all one color with no gray.
I tried this once so far, and it did exactly what I'd hoped. It darkened my hair while leaving the gray. And it was absolutely natural looking. My wife and kidssaid they'd never guess it was colored.
The only negative so far is that the chemicals did slightly bother me the first day - but I guess they do at the stylists too. Plus the stuff can get messy unless yourcareful. Apply either shirtless or with something disposable.
But overall, the results were better and more natural looking at 1/8th the cost and 1/4th the time than they would be at the stylists.
Ah the money I could have been saving...
Great stuff!"

Grecian Formula Consumer Reviews

"It contains lead our blood stream. never does what it claims... i used it and no color, followed as described. it says you shouldn't shower more than once a week...it is a junk and should not be sold at all... trust me...someone should sue this company... thank you"

"The box said that it would get rid of gray in a month. I used Grecian for 2 months and still had grays. Maybe it darkened a few hairs here andthere, but the point is I still had grays when I wanted to get rid of them all. What is really ridiculous is that the directions tell you to try and not shampoomore than once a week. Who the hell only shampoos once a week?!! I'm trying Youthair now...hopefully that will be better."

"About two years ago I got tired of using a messy woman's hair coloring product every two weeks. I asked a friend what he used to color his hair. He told me about Grecian formula 16. I followed the instructions (except for "not washing your hair for a week") I am very pleased with this product. My hair is the same color it was before I started graying. I use it every 2nd or 3rd day to maintain my color."

"It has become increasingly more difficult to cover my grey hair with Grecian. Now I read that I am not the only consumer experiencing difficulties with this product. The bottle says it contains lead acetate but this stuff is much less efficient than it used to be. I thought that Grecian was becoming less effective on my hair due to the many years of its continued use or that my hair has grown too white to get covered but the reason might be the formula has changed. It is so weak that I am considering trying something else."

ThymuSkin Consumer Reviews

"I've used the shampoo and lotion now for about 5 months and have noticed my hair texture and strength have improved 100%, but as for regrowth, only about half of my hair has come back right now and the rest i can only hope. Easier to use than rogaine (didn't like) but much more expensive. Will continue to use forever if it will keep the hairs i have remaining and in good health. Good luck to anyone who tries Thymuskin."

"I have developed a small bald spot above my left temple and was diagnosed with alopecia areata. On the advice of my doctor, I used Rogaine 5% for three months, which did not help. Then a friend recommended trying Thymuskin. I used it for 9 months with no noticeable results. Strangely enough, after another six months had passed, my bald spot filled up. My doctor says small bald patches like that often grow back within two years and he would not attribute this to Thymuskin."

"Thymusking gel stopped and reversed my hair loss. Nothing ever worked before."

Grey Hair and Possible Cancer Protection

Japanese scientists have recently discovered a link between early grey hair and the impact of harmful chemicals and radiation on our bodies. Under the harmful influence of free radical-forming chemicals and radiation, hair in mice turned prematurely grey. This was due to the fast maturing of the affected stem cells in the hair follicles, which made them unable to produce new melanocytes (pigment cells) and thus generate the pigment necessary to give colour to the hair. Instead, stem cells turned themselves into other types of cells in order to inhibit the multiplication of damaged cells.
It is a well known fact that toxic chemicals and ionizing radiation cause cell damage and DNA mutations. This discovery suggests that greying hair can protect our cells from cancer as it inhibits the proliferation of mutated stem cells that might ultimately cause tumors. Besides premature greying, this process can also be used to explain greying in older people, as DNA damage accumulates as we age. Further investigation will be needed to see if this theory is also true of other types of stem cells in our bodies, other than those in hair follicles.

Greyban Consumer Reviews

"Greyban is definitely better than Grecian, which I tried earlier, but not as good as I expected from the positive reviews I read. I am applying it every second day and it covers only about 50% of my gray. I can only recommend it to people who started graying relatively recently. This product is quite expensive when compared with hair dyes and requires a bigger commitment, so if you want to cover all your gray use a permanent hair dye."

"First of all I have baby fine strawberry blonde hair. Since the color of my hair is almost impossible to duplicate out of a bottle, I was unable to use over the counter hair dyes. Even professional salons could not duplicate my hair color. I was so glad to find something that would return my hair color to it's once beautiful glory and hide the impeding gray. I say results after only two treatments! It does leave your hair looking like it's greasy. So I apply it only at night and then I can wash my hair the next morning. This gives it time to work it's magic. It's great that my hair now looks like it did when I was in my teens and twentys! I would definitely recommend this anyone with fair colored hair, it works great!!"

"I had been using Grecian formula before trying GreyBan. It had worked for me but it became seemingly less effective after many years of continued use. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that GreyBan does a better job of blending white hair with my remaining dark brown hair. It seems to work better for brownish hair, whereas Grecian is more suitable for shades of black. But GreyBan should not be expected to dye all your hair in one application. It needs to be applied regularly and will never cover all your white hair. My worst areas of white are on the sides and some of the hairs there never grow dark. I give it only four stars because it needs to be applied at least twice a week which is much less convenient than using a permanent hair dye."

Youthair Consumer Reviews

"Have used Youth Hair for 15 years and now my wife uses it. Product works very well on light brown hair. Difficult to find now that Walmart does not carry it. Replaced by major brand products."

"The product works, I usually buy it at Walmart, but they say it was recalled, and I do not know where to purchase it now, can anyone tell me what storessell it."

"This product is a total Fraud and by far the worst I have ever used. Do you want to know a logical explanation behind it? Go to Youthair site, andif you click on Submit a review button on a review page, it takes you to an email address link. Meaning they want you to send in a mail, then they will review yourreview and then decide whether to post it on their site or not.
The last comment - You flush your $$ bills down the toilet and you are going to get the same worth as Youthair products. I promise!!"

"This is a good product to cover your gray, if you do not want to color all your hair. For those wishing to cover all their white areas, a regular hair dye is a more economical solution. The difficulty with this product is that it is effective in changing the hair color only so long as it stays in your hair. I usually apply it in the morning after washing my hair, then in the evening and again in the morning and wash it off the next morning. Thus it stays in my hair for 48 hours, while repeated applications seem to increase its efficacy. I do this once a week. The problem is styling your hair once you have this stuff on or when you start sweating or are caught in the rain - the chemical smell will start spreading instantly. This product really works, though you have to use it more frequently than a regular hair dye but it works more naturally."

Do Megasession Hair Transplants Increase The Chances of Having Complications?

Some physicians in their discussions with patients will relate the size and width of donor scars directly with the width of the strip that has been removed. This is an overly simplistic view of the cause of scaring, and may unfortunately mislead patients on some occasions.
Patients frequently ask how it is that we are able to harvest such relatively large strips from our patient’s donor area. The answer is really quite simple. There are a few surgical techniques that can be easily learned, which make it possible to reduce the overall tension on the wound and still get an excellent donor scar

Will My Hair Transplant Ever Begin To Thin?

With today’s closure, if the donor hair is taken in the mid of the donor zone and not on the fringes, and with the techniques of the trichophytic closure, it’s highly unlikely that the scar would be so pronounced that it would cause an interference with your daily life or routine. We do need to understand that as time goes on, we all, all types of scalps, men and women, will go on to have what is called senile alopecia. There will be some type of thinning and loss of density throughout the whole scalp. So yes, it is possible when you get into the 70s and 80s, that some of the hair that is transplanted may shed and fall

If I Have a Hair Transplant, Can I Still Wear My Hair Short?

In general, people who always cut their hair very short would be able to more easily camouflage their donor scars if they did FUE. These are tiny little punctate scars versus a linear incision, however, what a lot of people don’t understand about FUE is that if you have the type of genetic hair loss that your hair loss is going to continue over time and you are going to need more hair transplantation as the years go on and as you age, and you continue to do the FUE type of hair transplants, you can almost get a moth eaten appearance in the donor area versus having a one little linear line that can be very easily covered by hair.

Is a Hair Transplant Advisable When Losing Hair Rapidly?

The most important thing that you need to do now is to come in and have a consultation, because the first order of business is to see if we can determine why your hair loss has been accelerating recently. There can be a variety of causes, it may simply be that your male pattern baldness has gone through a phase where it has accelerated, but it can also be something else, so we need to take a careful history and do a careful examination in order to rule out any underlying causes. I always feel that if a patient has entered into a period of accelerated hair loss, the first order of business is to try to stop that accelerated hair loss before we do hair transplantation.

Transforming Thymus Cells into Skin Cells May Offer Future Cure for Baldness

Recent results published by a joint team of stem cell researchers from Sweden and Scotland may one day offer hope for those suffering from hair loss. The team, led by Professor Yann Barrandon, head of the stem cell lab at the University of Lausanne, had been searching for a way to help burn victims by growing viable skin when they unexpectedly changed one cell type into a completely different one. In the process, they ended up with skin cells complete with working hair follicles.
While testing how stem cells extracted from the thymus of lab rats would perform if transplanted into growing skin, the team discovered that the cells ceased behaving as they did in the thymus and began performing just like healthy skin cells.

Can NeoGraft Revolutionize Follicular Unit Extraction?

has received a lot of press lately with promises to make follicular unit extraction (FUE), a complex and labor intensive procedure requiring a highly skilled surgeon and staff, simpler, faster and more effective. However, NeoGraft has failed to garner the support of many of the world’s expert FUE practitioners (of which there exists only a handful) due to several key concerns.
Consisting of an adjustable, slowly rotating, motorized punch and a pneumatic pressure suction device that allegedly allows each follicular unit to slide in and out smoothly and uniformly, the NeoGraft method of extraction theoretically exerts less force on the grafts than manual extraction. This spinning punch however, while facilitating graft removal, may subject the follicular unit grafts to unnecessary and detrimental torsional forces. In addition, due to the potential for grafts to be wider at one end, there is also a possibility for transection as they are forced through the rotating punch.
Once extracted, the grafts are then sucked through a series of tubes into a collection canister where they are misted to keep them moist while they await implantation. Leading FUE physicians have expressed concerns that the route that the grafts take as they are sucked through the punch and into the collection canister may expose them to further damage. Furthermore, there are concerns that the resulting air flow from the pneumatic pressure may result in rapid desiccation (dehydration) of the extracted follicles. Dehydration of the follicles during surgical hair restoration is one of the primary causes of poor hair growth.
The NeoGraft hair transplant machine offers physicians two options for implanting the follicular unit grafts. They can be auto-loaded into an implantation cannula and then inserted into the recipient site pneumatically using reverse air pressure or, the physician has the option of manually implanting the grafts if he or she so desires. Manual implantation may prevent the delicate follicular unit grafts from exposure to yet another blast of potentially desiccating air pressure.
In addition to the above mentioned mechanical concerns, the NeoGraft machine has been mass marketed to the neophyte hair restoration surgeon as an easy to learn all-purpose device that replaces the need for highly skilled and experienced surgeons and their staff.   Since no automated device or machine can adapt or make critical decisions during the procedure like a skilled and experienced physician, there is a major concern that many patients who undergo this FUE procedure with the NeoGraft will be left with poor results.  Additionally, since the NeoGraft machine costs in excess of $70,000, the cost of FUE with the NeoGraft machine for each patient has actually increased over standard FUE rather than decreased.  While typical FUE procedures range between $6 and $10 per graft, some using the NeoGraft charge as much as $20 per graft.
Only time will tell what effect, if any, NeoGraft will have on the future of surgical hair restoration but, one thing is for certain. Regardless of the tools or device used to perform hair transplant surgery, there is no substitute for a skilled and experienced physician with a proven track record of producing excellent results.

Hair Loss Due To Health Problems

For many women, they remember the days when their hair was long, luxurious, and thick. However, if they are have had the same experience as Ruth Caton, it which her hair became thin and started falling out, they might have a medical condition.
Caton realized early on that not only was her hair falling out, but that she was feeling dizzy and gaining weight. It took a few doctors to diagnose her with hypothyroidism, meaning her thyroid gland was not producing enough hormones. After taking replacement hormones, Caton’s hair returned back to normal.
According to Dr. Leslie Coker, hair loss really affects women because it is men that are thought of as being bald. “We’re not supposed to lose our hair,” she stated.

However, more than 30 million women in the US have experienced hair loss, and in some women this can be a symptom of a chronic medical condition. These conditions include anemia, thyroid disease, and polycystic ovarian syndrome. Also some women can experience hair loss after childbirth, crash diets, emotional stress, and surgery.
